Our History

Buchholz Mortuary was founded in 1949 by the late William G. Buchholz, a Saint Louis funeral director and embalmer.  The original facility was located in North Saint Louis on West Florissant Ave. near Riverview Blvd.

In 1969, Buchholz Mortuaries expanded to the North County suburb of Spanish Lake to serve the many families that had moved from the city.  Cletus Buchholz, son of William G. Buchholz, became President of the firm and the family embarked on a third expansion effort in 1984.  A historic building built in 1955 as the Florissant City Hall and later used by the Florissant Police Department was acquired and extensively renovated by the Buchholz family to serve the residents of Florissant.  Adopting the City of Florissant motto, the building was named Buchholz Valley of Flowers Mortuary.

Buchholz Mortuaries is currently owned and operated by third generation of the Buchholz family.  Jim, Tom, and Cindy Buchholz, children of Cletus and Philomena Buchholz, continue the family funeral tradition.  Recent growth and expansion of the firm has included Buchholz Mortuary West which opened in 1994 and serves residents of West Saint Louis County.  The newest facility, Buchholz Mid Rivers Mortuary was opened in 1999 to meet the needs of the residents in neighboring Saint Charles County.  In 2003, Buchholz Mortuaries took over the records of Math Hermann and Son Funeral Home including all the records of past funerals and their pre-needs.

Family tradition and local ownership have been important to the Buchholz family.  That is why Buchholz Mortuaries is a member of the Association of Saint Louis Owned and Operated Funeral Homes and proudly displays the distinctive association logo.
